Choosing an exit row seat

Exit row seats have no seats directly in front of them, and so provide you with more personal space than standard seats. If you want to request an exit row seat you must meet certain requirements, shown below. These seats are available to request in World Traveller Plus and World Traveller only, on longhaul flights.

Exit row seats are situated either next to or immediately behind the emergency exit door. In the unlikely event of an evacuation you will be expected to assist in the opening of the emergency exit door.

Restrictions on who’s allowed to sit in an exit row seat

In accordance with CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) requirements, the following categories of passengers cannot be allocated an exit row seat:

  • Passengers who are either substantially blind or substantially deaf, to the extent that they might not readily understand printed or verbal instructions given.
  • Passengers who are unable to understand and carry out instructions given in English.
  • Passengers who are unable to reach, open, lift and throw out the exit door in an emergency.
  • Passengers who because of physical stature, age or sickness have difficulty in moving quickly.
  • Children under 12 (whether accompanied or not) and infants.
  • Passengers who are travelling with anyone who would require their assistance in the event of an emergency.

When requesting an exit row seat you will be asked to verify your eligibility.

Exit row seat information

  • You can request an exit row seat in World Traveller or World Traveller Plus from 14 days to 4 days before your flight, subject to availability.
  • On shorthaul flights there is no extra legroom in exit row seats, so they are available as a general seating choice.
  • Exit row seats can be requested on an individual passenger basis and do not have to be purchased for all passengers on a booking.  However, if any passenger in the booking is not eligible to sit in an exit row, exit row seats will not be offered for the entire booking.
  • Exit row seats are non-transferable.
  • We have the sole discretion to determine whether you meet the requirements to sit in an exit row seat. If you do not meet the requirements, you will be assigned an alternative seat and the amount paid for the seat will not be refunded.
  • If, after the date of requesting an exit row seat, you become unable to fulfil the requirements to sit in an exit row seat, you should contact us. You will be eligible to apply for a refund if you contact us at least 48 hours before your flight.
  • Executive Club Gold members, oneworld Emerald member equivalents and other passengers on the same booking can request an exit row seat free of charge, at any time before the flight.
  • Exit row seats can be pre-assigned at a cost of £50, €60 or US$75 per person per sector. This fee will be converted into local currency where applicable.
  • If you are travelling from the Middle East, from 24 hrs before departure, you can now only buy your exit row or bulkhead seat at the airport.
